Mixed-Initiative Dialog Management for Speech-based Interaction with Graphical User Interfaces

Synopsis:

This article examines the use of speech to control graphical user interfaces to assist disabled people in interacting with computers.

Pros:

1) Allowed disabled people access to a majority of the features of the computer by allowing them to control the keyboard and mouse by speaking.
2) The conversation and control method improved task completion time by 16.8%.
3) I like how the system could ask the user for clarification if it was not sure of the users intentions.

Cons:

1) They system took a while to respond to the speech based mouse control. It took time to process the word stop, until which the mouse was still in motion.
2) Although the system does allow access of computers to a broader base of users it is highly inefficient when compared to traditional methods of interaction.
