Review of the article Mixed-Initiative Dialog Management for Speech-based Interaction with Graphical User Interfaces

Summary:

Researches created a "conversation and control" operation device to control guis, Users are not required to first focus on objects, and when the speech recognition it will ask clarification problems.

Pros:

  • clearly lays out the styles of speech command software which already exists.
  • clarification items isn't a bad idea, it prevents you from having to state the same item over and over again
  • The study is interesting in that it proves to be a speed up from normal operation

Cons:

  • It seems like it would be very easy to do something that you did not intend, The focus concepts adds a buffer between an accidental activation and difficulty
  • The system doesn't address the problem of control systems being extremely complex. Imagine navigating Photoshop's tools for instance.
  • having clarification questions pop up could get annoying fast if done wrong
